Trailer purchase

Couple questions. I'm buying a NEW trailer for a friend overseas. he knows which model he wants etc.

Any specific issue(s) with buying a TT sight unseen? or an approach to this? I'm not anywhere near the two dealers I found inventory at.

Anyone heard of camperliquidators in VT?

Thanks

Ed.

  • I bought mine sight unseen. Once I settled on manufacturer and model I emailed all the dealerships within a days drive and asked for their lowest out the door price. Only 2 responded with a number and not a bunch of salesman b.s. Compared the build sheets of the 2 and tried to squeeze some extras out of the cheaper, more equipped one (didn't happen)and got in touch with the credit union. Most of my paperwork was done before I drove to the dealership and we finished the rest after the PDI. Pretty smooth transaction. Don't know how to mix in the power of attorney thing in there but like most things its probably a lot easier than it seems
  • It is really not your concern. If a person asks you to buy a certain TT model how could you possibly guarantee they will like it or the price you paid for it?

As mentioned earlier unless you have a previous agreement (in writing) it is your TT until it is transferred to the other person.

It is not like you are picking up a pair of beach shoes, you are spending some big bucks.
  • If you friend is thinking American travel trailers are like caravans, he going to be sadly mistaken. But that is why they only cost 1/2 as much. If it's a short term tour, most any will do.
  • All of the legal issues are easily solved by a power of attorney. I've spent more than a few years in Afghanistan and Iraq and have had to use them regularly for vehicle registrations, selling vehicles, etc.

With all of that said, you need to talk to your buddy and attempt to talk him into waiting to return to make the purchase. I spent many hours looking at trucks online while deployed and understand the desire to make the purchase immediately, but there is zero benefit to doing so. It is just more payments he makes while not being able to use it and more depreciation.

Sometimes things on dealers websites don't show things that you would immediately dislike in person.

    Talk him into waiting.
  • Are you shipping it to him/her

    or

    he/they arriving HERE...?

they do sell RV's everywhere in the world...

it is a mobile House.. not a car... even cars need to FIT the user..

and the Paperwork could be a real problem.. as are Taxes. Registration and plates. and Insurance.

unless "YOU" are going to "OWN" it and be responsible for it. Legally
  • Please do not buy sight unseen. Determine the length and weight you want first. Then go look.
  • >>If you are buying sight unseen, why can't your friend buy it him/her self?<<

I'm guessing it's not so easy to purchase a big ticket item from abroad. Credit card issues?

But as was suggested *bridge? really?* it would at the least require a walkthrough from someone familiar with RVs. Good luck and hope your friend enjoys his RV!.
  • Welcome to the forum.....

If you are buying sight unseen, why can't your friend buy it him/her self?
Yes, there issues. Who will be the legal owner, sign the papers, loan, title, insurance, state vehicle registration, etc?

No, none. Don't bridges get sold that way ?
  • Color, style, design, space, proportion, looks, fabrics, materials, lighting, height, width, even the firmness of the mattress are complete unknowns until you actually set foot inside. Then you realize photos and reality are 2 different things.
