As I said in my first post on this thread, nobody knows what was really going on. What we do know is that the shots being fired caused the thief to swerve, which is what ultimately caught the attention of a passing deputy. So, based upon this information, the man's actions are one of the reasons why he is alive. That's all we have to go on!
Would the police have ultimately apprehended them before they reached their destination? Maybe, maybe not.
What and/or who was waiting on them at their destination? More armed criminals or an empty cow field? We don't know.
Were they going at a high rate of speed when the owner opened the door and shot? Perhaps they were stopped at a traffic light?
Did the owner shoot at the perps, or at the truck, or up in the air, or wildly and aimlessly? That info isn't given.
The owner made the right choice, and perhaps the only choice he had at the time...based upon him being there, present in the situation at the time it occurred.
