trailer vers 5th wheel

Hi I am thinking of getting a artic fox 32a or a 280 blackstone I have a 29 foot 5th wheel but I would like to take a atv in my 8 foot box and toy haulers are big and only have a couch unless you get a 45 footer. My truck is a 2012 chev dually .My question is do they track, ride as good ,are they going to drag when going through dips because they seem to sit lower to ground and over all length seems long compared to my 5th wheel. what do you think thanks
  • Never pulled a 5th before, but pull a 33ft TT with a dually. Very stable ride, esp compared to pulling same TT with a 1/2 ton suburban. Have entertained moving to a 5th, but losing the bed has prevented this.

Travel trailers tow as well as a fifth wheel given the truck, trailer, and hitch are set up properly.

People think a fifth wheel can't sway and that is simply not true. Fifth wheels tend to not sway because of the incredibly heavy pin weight (20- 25 ish % of the trailer weight rating is on the pin). Travel trailers tend to run 12-15% ish on tongue weight.

Not only that, the 5th wheel's pin weight is right over the rear axle. But with a Propride or similar hitch you can do just as well in terms of sway with a TT.
  • I have pulled both and prefer the 5th wheel. Yes you can get a pretty good towing ride with a TT but mine was due to having equalizer + sway control. The clearence of a trailer has nothing or very little to due when being pulled down the highway when talking "control". 5th wheel trailers tend to pull easier and it has a more natural feel to it. Manuvering is easier as well. But i think the question that you need to answer is less of how it is to pull and more of what you need in a trailer. So my suggestion is get to the RV dealership and walk through both that are in your price range. Think about what you will be using it for. A lot of trailers can look amazing inside because they put a lot of attention in cosmetics. Really take a look at the functionality of it. Such as counter space and cabinents (Storage).
  • This is a fairly old thread, but both options are good. In my family we have 5th Wheels and TTs along with a TC. For me, I use two different TTs. I choose the shorter one because I like getting back further off road to places where a large 5th wheel or a long TT wouldn't go. I also carry a quad in the back of my truck, so a 5th wheel really isn't an option. Some TTs are low to the ground, so if that is an issue, then it is a simple process to move the axles above the leaf springs instead of below them. The key is a good hitch assembly and proper tongue loading with an appropriate size TV, which the OP appears to have.
  • The new trucks will tow a TT close to the stability of a fith wheel. I'm pulling with a 2014 RAM 2500 LB 4wd CC and I have no sway, push or any disturbance at all. I pull a 27.9 Sunnybrook TT with 1204 TW. I use no WD hitch or spring bars.

Taking the ATV with you will be much more fun than dragging a 5th-wheel and no ATV. Good move.

Precisely why I went to a trailer. A bit scary getting my ATv up into the truck bed which is quite high. I rigged up a winch on a 2 x 4 anchored into the post holes and tow it up backwards, but drive it out.
