Trans oil change ?

I have a 2002 F 350 SRW, 8' bed 7.3 diesel motor and the original transmission, 178,000 miles on it, bought it brand new. I have changed the transmission oil every year in this truck and have never had a problem with it, at all. I am thinking that changing the trans. oil has really helped it after hearing all the trans. horror stories. How often do you change the trans. oil???? ? I put in Mercon and a new filter every 12 mos. in my garage at home. About $65. to $75.00 a year..

  • That’s a pretty impressive record, brooks379. I go by my manual, 15,000 miles towing and 30,000 otherwise. Since I don’t tow for 15,000 miles straight, in practice it gets changed about every 20,000 miles.
  • I change mine every 25k i have never had to have a transmission rebuilt and i towed heavy with an E4OD in overdrive against everyones recomendations and even that one was still good at 220,000 when the truck went away.
  • Old gearhead here as well.

We always used to say "oil is cheap" compared to hard parts.

In this case ATF, but preventative maintenance is key. Plus it is relaxation therapy for me. I do not like anyone working on my vehicles if I am able to do it myself. Plus it is done RIGHT.
  • I do mine every 25-30K miles.

It`s called preventative maintenance for a reason!
  • Now you got me going...then the proverbial question of '...should I use the Tow/Haul
    button when towing or hauling?...'

Or the '....but the MPG may go down when I use the Tow/Haul button....'

but, that part of the automatic herd out numbers us gearheads...

I talked to a guy the other day and told him good oil was the life blood of a trans. and he looked at me funny. DUH.........
hmm.. maybe he thought you actually put *oil* in it.
  • BenK, I think you hit the nail on the head ....It's the "Gear Head" in some of us. I talked to a guy the other day and told him good oil was the life blood of a trans. and he looked at me funny. DUH.........
  • Congrat's on your very good maintenance record and philosophy

I change mine min every other year but it boils down to how the ATF
is doing in reference to 'your' setup and 'your' driving style and
    terrain driven

Most folks take this kind of stuff...heck everything...as a one size
fits all. Ditto those advising HOW2

I've changed out a fresh charge (about 500 miles) of Mobil Synthetic
engine oil, ATF, diff fluid after one extremely hard run from sea level
up to Lake Tahoe and back towing my +8.5K lb boat

Some use oil analysis and a good thing but not for me. Maybe will
if something seems amiss that can't figure out, but the ~$28 bucks
buys most of the oil/filters for me

Am old and been (still am) boy racer, wrench/gear-head, etc all my
life. So know enough about my rigs to understand that the oil in
question needs change because it has broken down enough for me to change

When the dash engine oil gauge starts to fluctuate, PSI down a bit
and the biggie...starts to consume...it is time or past time to change

No dash gauge for ATF, so know when the 'smell' and 'color' is off...but
with my every other year flush, it has only happened a couple times
and when knew abused the stuff

All of the OEM and even after market ATF sensors take it from the
test port....but....the lions share of the temp creation is inside
the TC and at the tips/edges of the vanes. So how would one measure
    that?

So I like you, flush often and the cost is cheap compared to a rebuild
and/or stuck out in the boonies with questionable service providers...if
    they can even be found...
  • I change mine by the book.

Any lab oil report to confirm what you think?
If not, IMHO I think your throwing a bunch of good ATF away. Nothing wrong with that. It keeps the economy growing. :)
  • My 03 7.3L F450 tranny is fine at 126k. Changed maybe every 30-40k. Easy enough to check the fluid to see if it needs to be changed.
