Trans Temp & Bike Rack Up Front

So the last couple trips my trans temps seemed a bit higher than normal. I've been carrying the bikes up front for some time now..... Anyway with the bikes it was hanging between 220 and 240 ( 05 Chevy with Allison ) took the bikes off and my wife took them on the back of her van and on the way home mostly 200 and at time like 210.... No more bikes up front for me.
  • I had the Swagman XTC2 mounted on the kingpin on our 07 MS but the new MS has the front cap extended over the kingpin so the bikes will probably go on the back now.

    XTC2 worked well for us.

I had no proof of why I would never place bikes in front of the radiator. Thanks for confirming my thoughts!
  • Your 05 should be the LLY engine. There is a history of some of these trucks having heating issues. It's certainly possible that if you have not applied one of the known remedies for this issue, that the bikes up front have disrupted the airflow just enough to encounter the problem.
  • Np problems with 2 bikes on front of my '02 F250, no temp change at all. :)
  • Get a tongue mounted bike rack like an Arvika rack. I have had mine for about 8 years now. The same rack in now on my fiver. I used to tow my TT with a 2001 PSD excursion.
With a tongue mounted rack there is no air flow or head light issue.
There is no bouncing. Bikes are always in view.
Tongue racks can be more expensive, but are not much more than a good bike rack plus the cost of welding a receiver on the rear.
People continue to fuss with other methods, however a tongue mounted rack is the solution for me.

  • Had the same issue. I even ducted the air around the bikes into he tranny cooler without any effect. No more bikes up front! Bikes are a PITA. On the rear the see saw movement cucked them into the TT and dented the rear. I placed them inside but they also bounce around. Last few trips, no bikes no problem. We will be upgrading to a pick up and the we will get a bike rack for the bed.
  • I haven't had any issue with my 08 D/A. I only have two bikes on the front so very little disturbance in the air flow.
  • I carry a 3000 honda on front of my 2500hd and it would run about 12-15 degrees warmer with it up front.Mostly around 195-200.

I added an aux cooler and its on the passenger side of the grill it now runs 175 in the same weather with the honda upfront.I think with the stock cooler in the middle and the gen there it diverted the air flow but with the aux cooler off to the side that ine is now in the diverted airs flow.came back last weekend and it was 107 degrees i was running at 180-187 degrees but dropped to 175 once i got into low to mid 90s weather closer to home.

Last year on same trip it hit 225-230 climbing the grade out of bishop ca in cooler weather this year it hit 200 doing the same grade and it was easy 15 degrees warmer this trip.
