Transmission oil cooler

I have a Chevy 6.0 with six speed auto and the optional HD towing package which has an external trans cooler. Since this truck is now used for 95% towing I'm thinking of replacing this stock cooler with something bigger. Wondering what people are using that connects directly to the GM stock oil lines?
  • I would first check to make sure you need it. If your temps don't ever go above 220 I wouldn't try to "fix" it.
It's also important that the fluid gets hot enough to burn off any moisture, which is achieved above about 140 degrees.
  • So what kind of temps are you seeing right now?

IMHO I would leave well enough alone. I've seen people do this and break hoses or a fitting leak or something gets rubbed up and causes a leak or even cause overheating problems by stacking too many coolers in front of the radiator.

If you're not over gross on the load you should be fine.

rather than replace, just add another in-line.

That's always an option however the more fitting the more chances of leaks. I really would just like one larger oil cooler.

Try Royal Purple Wetter Water in your radiator. It helps keep the coolent running up to 20° cooler under heavy load or high heat conditions. This will in turn help keep the transmission fluid cooler.

My factory trans cooler is already external so your idea is really not an option.

Of the problems I have had with the 6.0 Chevy, transmission oil heating up has never been one of them. Not sure a larger replacement/upgrade is needed.

I've seen temps up to 193 when climbing steep grades in warm weather. It would then level off in the 175 range on level surfaces again in warm weather ( in the mid to upper 80's). Haven't towed this trailer yet in hot weather. I would like to take 20 degrees off of the temps above as I'll be headed out west this summer.
