Transmission Temp?

My Duramax/Allison owners manual says 150-190 is normal operating range. My trans averages about 160 unloaded and about 180 with 7,500 pounds behind it.
I think I hit 200 once towing up 4th of July pass in Idaho when it was 95 degrees outside.

I'm of no help on the Fords......sorry.

230 is now 1/2 way, operating temps of the new trans are higher. If memory serves, they now use a Getrag designed transmission, licensed by Ford to build.

I'm not sure why the dampened gauge is construed as not accurate. It moves when it needs to.

Krikey. The 60's trans fluid temp chart that just won't go away.....
I used to run a scangauge, and now an OBD wifi dongle with apps on my iPhone.

The Ford gauge is dampened by software, it has nothing to do with resistors. There are 2 reasons the Ford gauges don't move around a lot. 1) Engineers determined you do not need to know the nuances of trans temp, only when it is rising (and it will register temp changes when it goes even 10 degrees above "normal")

2) Ford has a very thermally stable cooling setup in most of their vehicles, especially their trucks.

If the engine or trans starts to heat up, the temp gauge will increment up. I have found during hard pulls, the gauge will go from 4/10 to 5/10 to indicate that it is warmer than normal, but still fine. During one particularly hard climb at GCWR up a 12% grade @ 6000' asl, the gauges started to move, one increment at a time. Nothing acted up, boiled, leaked or even smelled bad. Peak temp I believe was 250ish when it went near hot. With the latest LV fluid, that is extremely heavy duty, and is rated as "lifetime" fluid, heat is much less destructive than it used to be.

Fords also have " envelope protection", whereby they reduce engine output as required to allow heat to be dissipated without harm, A message appears indicating " power reduced", and things get a little slower. My experience has been that my last 2 F150's were tough as nails, and way more durable than the 2 Toyotas, and 2 nissans that preceded them. That's progress!

With just 16,000 miles on the V-10 we were headed out on a cross country trip. I elected to go ahead and change out the transmission fluid and replaced with pure synthetic. I immediately noticed a 10 degree drop in the trans fluid temps across the board. I also run pure synthetic oil and change it out every 7,500 miles.

For me the highest it read going south on the WV Turnpike was 198. On flat ground it would sit around 185. and that was running up some decent grades in 2nd gear at 60mph.

Just to put my two cents in. Newer transmissions use or should be using a synthetic oil in them which should let you run 220 with no issue.

Just as a example.

My 2006 chevy colorado with a 4 speed transmission 4l60e. The factory computer will put the truck into a limp mode at transmission temps of 270*f. I installed a aftermarket B&M stacked plate cooler.

I tow in 3rd gear as Gm has told me to do. When towing up big hills with the a/c running my transmission temp will be about 194*f. And normal running around town in 4th gear no tralier I am about 149*f to 167*f depending on outside temps. These readings are from my edge insite which is plugged into the obd port.

Sorry if I missed it but what are your transmission temp showing.

Also depends where the pickup is located. Whether the temperature is measured before or after the cooler. Torque converter outlet will read quite a bit higher than the pan, especially if the converter has been operating unlocked for a period of time. With my old 4spd 47RE which only had lockup in 3rd and 4th, I used to see temps as high as 270 with the converter unlocked. It went back down quickly after the converter locked up again. Synthetic fluid handled it OK.

Normal operating temperature with the converter locked was 150 to 170 depending on ambient temperature. The 68RFE in my present truck is about the same.
