1/2 ton SUV with 6600-9200 tow rating range? And people are saying you will have limited trailer options? They live in a bubble. Seriously.
I have towed with a Mid-SUV comfortably as well as a 1/2 SUV with the known soft coil springs in the rear. Payload and those springs are what to watch.
However on paper you may think you are over payload, when actually having the WDH bars attached and all hooked up, a scale shows otherwise because some weight is distributed off the rear end. The scale is what really matters, but playing devils advocate, if you're that close to the edge of a rating, you're probably too close!
The soft rear ends are EASILY accounted for with stiff WHD bars in the 1000-1400lbs range. I highly recommend using 1400lbs bars for any tongue weight over 800 on these SUV's. I run both 1000 and 1400 on my current camper and much prefer the 1400's.
And I normally say Gross Trailer Weight Rating should not be used for shopping purposes because rarely does anyone load their trailer to that number, but in this case I think it applies very well because of the great uncertainty.
So, set your sights on trailers with gross weights of 6500 to around 8000, assuming you get an SUV that can pull 9200lbs. You will find DOZENS UPON DOZEN of bunk houses to chose from.
Visit a few RV dealers near by to get an idea of what brands are available near you and available now and available to order. Give them some numbers to stay within so they dont try to sell you something more. This is how people get caught into buying something too big..."they got sold"!
