Travel Trailer Insurance

Hi all, new here, first post. New to the whole TT scene as well. Anyways, we very soon will be purchased a new TT and I have questions about insurance.

Are there any company's out there that will write a separate policy on just the TT only? The reason I ask is because we have Allstate for our cars and home, and don't want to switch the cars and home, but would like to see if there is better or more competitive pricing out there.

Right now, we are looking at $300/year for a 2014 passport 2300bh with a $600 standard collision $0 comprehensive with allstate.

Any help is appreciated!

  • I did have my trailer on my car insurance policy for a year to two. I got a quote from Good Sam and received better coverage for a lower price.
  • We used to have Allstate for everything and don't think our premium was nearly that much....thinking more like less than $100 per 6 months. Then Allstate started playing games so we moved to Farm Bureau for everything. Our premium for the trailer is $86 per 6 months.

With your auto coverage, the trailer is covered while being towed. With the homeowner, the contents are covered. Suggest you go back to the agent and find out if that figure is really correct and why.

So much with insurance depends on the area you're in. That may be part of it, but I'd try to dig a bit deeper before paying that premium. Oh, BTW, welcome to the forum! And happy camping!!
  • I choose to ensure auto and TT with one carrier just to avoid any of the finger pointing in case something odd happens. State Farm did me right when my TT was struck by lightning and did serious damage. I doubt they are the cheapest by a long shot but they have treated me well. BTW, TT insurance is pretty cheap anyway.
  • I just bought my insurance through GoodSam. 100% replacement and $3000 for contents for the first 5 years then what I paid for the trailer after that and it was cheaper than the quote I got from Progressive or my car/homeowners insurance co.

Edit: I should point out that GoodSam doesn't provide the insurance. They are just the agent. National General is the actual insurance provider.
  • I have State Farm on everything. I get a discount by keeping all my insurance in one place. Once a year I meet with my agent to discuss things and see if any changes need to be made. Here in MN when towing the TT you are covered for liability but, you need a separate policy to cover any damage that may occur when you are at the park or parked at home.
  • We have Progressive on the RV only unless we are towing then the car is covered also.
  • Most companies give discounts for multiple policies. Each state is different as how insurance works. Here, while towing, my auto policy covers the TT. My homeowners covers the contents and a separate policy covers everything else. I am sure you can get a policy elsewhere but I would start with who you have your tow vehicle insurance with.

I have insurance on 1997 Jayco TT that would pay $3500 if totaled and its $100 a year so $300 for full coverage on something that is probably worth $17,000 (?) sounds ok to me. I would also say that years back I went from Allstate to Citzens and saved a lot. The Allstate agent contacted me and said why did you change, we would have given you a better price!!!!! WELL then WHY didn't you from the get go!!!! LOL

We must have a good AllState agent then, because once a year he makes an appointment with us to review all our insurance needs and we modify something almost every year. You've got to be diligent with that or in time, you will get "sucker punched" financially.

  • I'm with AllState also for everything: Home, autos, life, RV, and even a couple investments. I don't think you can do any better than AllState. We've had to put a few claims in over our life-time, and AllState has always done us very good. They replaced ALL the siding on our PUP, then turned right around a few months later and paid for a hole in the roof on the PUP. Out of pocket was minimal compared to the total cost for both of these claims.

One thing to consider, if your happy with AllState for everything else your insured for, then you'll be happy having your camper covered too with them. If your not happy, then maybe it's time to switch. One thing is for sure, you get better discounts when one company has multiple policies with you.

I'm fairly loyal to AllState. Not because their prices are the dirt cheapest. Oh, you can find cheaper insurance, but you'll end up paying at the end with time, effort, and loss of use of your property (time and usage) if you ever do need to put in a claim.

Consider the total package, not just the premium price, but how good are they at dealing with claims ... and multiple claims in short succession.

    Additional Edit:

You really need to consider all the factors when getting RV insurance, especially with a detachable trailer. You really need to be covered when your camper is:

    1. attached to the tow vehicle (the tow vehicle policy covers in the event of a mishap.

    2. detached from the truck when parked, either in storage or in use. The RV policy will cover this. Example: if your at a camp ground a tree falls on your roof, or a tornado blows it away, fire and theft. RV insurance covers this.

    3. personal belongings or personal affects. Your RV insurance may cover this or your home-owners may cover this. Our home owners policy covers 100% of the contents inside the camper that's not screwed to the floor or wall. That includes laptop computers to ink pens.

    4. bodily injury. Oh yes ... very important you have this coverage somewhere. If you have a garden hose across your campsite, and a kid trips over it and breaks his leg, YOU can be held liable for negligence and get sued and loose. If someone falls inside your camper, YOU are responsible. This is covered under our home owners.

However, if there's a hole in the ground on your campsite and a kid falls in it and breaks a leg, the campground is responsible.... see the difference?

A combination of these 4 insurance areas is why it's good to keep everything with one insurance company, they work together to protect you the most.
