These guys are crazy. The OP is brand new to camping, and want to do an extended tour as their first trip.
You guys and your "One Ton - itis" make me LOL.!!!! Inevitably, every single "can I tow with this?" post ends up with - "you better get a ONE TON to pull that pop up!" This stuff is getting ridiculous.
I guarantee every single "you need a one-ton" guy on this board started out with something much, much smaller.
To the OP - you are getting talked into a $60,000 truck!!! not to mention a new 24' Travel Trailer will be around $19 - $20k on average.
Why not try the darn MDX for a while? It's paid off, and two people and a baby do not "need" a 24 foot travel trailer. I commend your minimalist approach. Coachman makes a very cozy 19 foot trailer under 4500 pounds gross, and KZ makes some under 3,500 pounds gross weight.
To the One-Ton crowd: doesn't it make sense to introduce new RVers to our hobby in an "easy" and cost effective manner? Why does every post always end up with "you better get a one ton!" ??
Just because most of use will eventually get a 30 footer, that doesn't mean folks can't try the little trailer route, and use their paid-off family cars for a while.
OP - you might actually end up in a 3/4 ton or a one ton if that's what you really want. We have no idea of your personal finances, nor is it any of our business. But - MOST beginning RVers start off small, and part of the fun of the hobby is "working your way up" into a bigger tow vehicle, and into a bigger RV.
as long as you are safe, and feel safe pulling the camper, have fun! Do not get talked into a diesel one ton right off the bat. They are not necessary, will only cause you extreme costs, and might make your 6 month adventure come to an end prematurely because you have spent all your savings buying fuel.
You know how the oil change for your MDX costs $29.99 at jiffy lube? Well - your oil change on a 3/4 ton or one ton truck will start at $60, maybe even $70. You know how your tires cost you roughly $110 each for your MDX? Try $250 each.
EVERYTHING is more expensive with a big truck.
