The day to day needs of a couple with a small child doing essentially a "full time" type of trip would likely go beyond the payload limits of the Acura MDX.
"Safety" is what it's all about, and clearly, when things start getting heavy, then a bigger tow vehicle is better. For what the Acura could be sold for, a used, good condition 3/4 ton gasser truck could be bought, and they would still have a "paid for" vehicle.
There are few modern vehicles that as versatile as a crew cab pickup truck.
Why recommend to the OP to buy something small, only to have to trade up to something bigger later ? Why not suggest they start out "getting it right" the first go 'round ? Buying once, then trading up later almost always cost more money than just doing correct the first time.
