The main issue with is am MDX doesn't tow a travel trailer well. As per the manual, you can't go over 55 mph which is 88 kph. When travelling on our 110 kph highways here, we go 105 kph which is 65 mph, the speed limit of our trailer. 88 kph feels like a snail and drags out already long trips. Filling with gas every 250 kms (155 miles) or so isn't fun either especially if you're travelling a night and may not have gas stations every 250 kms along the way.
I've towed with an MDX for 7 years. And mine was the newer model that towed 5000#. It towed our 3000# loaded pop up like a dream. Towing a travel trailer was a new ball game and not all that fun.
I also towed our 3000# pop up with a 3500# tow limit SUV. Night and day difference when we moved to towing it with our 5000# tow limit MDX. And since this poster's MDX is one with a 3500# limit, she's more likely to be maxing out her towing specs.
I don't think the OP needs a one ton truck. But if you want to keep your speed up a bit more and not drain your tank of gas every few hours, something shorter is necessary. A pop up or Trail Manor would fit the bill. The teardrops mentioned may be okay as well. I'm not sure of those would be in the type of trailers in which Acura limits you to 55 mph. Being able test tow one of those would be useful if that was possible. That way the OP could see how the engine was revving and how fast they were going through fuel and see if towing at higher than 55 is taking a toll on the engine.
And I'll add that I'm not a speed daemon. But here we have mostly 2-way highways with very small shoulders. So towing at 55 can endanger you and others on the road. And making it difficult to pass you makes for a long line of traffic behind you and many grouchy people.
