Wow, thank you all for your thoughtful opinions, perspectives, advice, suggestions, and experience-sharing. They definitely provide a lot of food for thought and many more topics to research, which is exactly what we were looking for.
We did go to an RV dealership last weekend (they're all a bit far, so we can't go as often as we'd like, and a lot of their stock was out because it's high season and people rented them), and that's kind of how we started down the travel trailer route instead of thinking about the Class B or C motorhome. It's also when we realized that trailers and RVs are more spacious than we had imagined. Even the ones that the salesman thought were small seemed quite large to us. But we'll definitely be going more times as we do our research. At any rate, we're not in a hurry to buy; we'll probably wait at least until winter to get anything.
We weren't planning on bringing a crib or a swing because by then we think our son will probably be bedsharing with us full time at nights and he hasn't used a swing since he was a newborn. The Pack 'n' Play is a good idea for naps, though. Most of the space-hogging gear we have for him these days are his toys, but we're hoping the great outdoors will be a good enough toy for him for a while at least. In the meantime we'll also try to make an inventory of the things we think we'll need to bring with us and see how much space they take up.
A couple of questions my husband reminded me to ask:
Is boondocking with a travel trailer more difficult than with a Class B or C RV?
Are there restrictions on paved roads you can go on with a trailer? Or do certain roads have length restrictions on the trailer?
Thanks again, everyone!
