Travel Trailer Rentals

I would like to rent a travel trailer this summer in Massachusetts. I, however do not have a vehicle that could tow. Is there, or has anybody heard of a company that would rent a trailer and also a tow vehicle? Do car or truck rental companies allow towing trailers?
Thanks

  • Hertz has a commercial equipment rental division, in select cities they rent 2500 and 3500 series trucks, gas and diesel, with brake controllers, probably not WDH though.
  • If traveling I second the idea of a motorhome. If camping in one spot, find a local rental company and have them spot the TT for you.

I have never heard of any of the typically car rental companies allowing towing with their vehicles. Even if they did it would need to be equipped with an appropriate class receiver, brake controller and you would need a weight distribution hitch. The hitch especially takes tweaking to get it right...IMO more work than it would be worth.

Also, might be worth checking Craigslist, in my area there are a few folks who own Class A MH and rent them privately.
  • TT rental companies offer siting services as woodglue mentioned. Most commercial vehicle rental companies have a clause that prohibits towing with their vehicles unless a qualified commercial customer. Too much liability for the both the TT rental company and the vehicle rental company for inexperienced folks learning to to tow with their vehicles.

If you are looking to vacation in one spot, see if someone will site a TT for you there. If you want to travel rent a motorhome.
  • My neighbor has rented form either Avis or Alamo here in SLC and he has had both Ram and Chevy 3500 Diesels but it was like 150 a day.
  • UHaul rents trucks for $19.95 per day .
The mileage charge is huge .
These trucks are often 1500 standard cab long box GM with a 4.8 v8 , air and auto .
they do have the typical class 3 type hitch and a 7 pin receptacle .
I do not know the GVW rating or the GCWR rating .
But you could get that from Uhaul.
If you are just towing to one spot 100 miles away and parking it for a week , that might work .
The missus will have to take the kids in her prius to the campground so she will have a runaround car .
better to rent a motorhome and have the missus drive separate .
  • A small TT could be towed by a rented truck Ask the car rental companies what their policies are.

A larger (heavier/longer) trailer would likely require a 2500 size truck and a stabilizer/equalizer hitch and a brake controller. I have only seen the car rental places with 1500 size trucks.

Also ask local car/truck dealers if they rent. You might get lucky and find a good used running truck set up for towing a TT to rent.
  • Sometimes travel trailer rental companies will "spot" a trailer, meaning they'll tow the trailer to the location or campground you choose.

Call around and find out if you have any businesses that will do this. We have a few here in SoCal that do this. I don't know that there are any companies that will allow you to tow a trailer with their vehicles - right off hand.
