- rvshrinkerExplorer IIII’m surprised more of you aren’t concerned about your trailer being towed away. If I boondock and head out for ten hours for a hike, that’s a lot of hours and very few eyes on my rig. A hitch lock seems like pretty cheap insurance, obviously it won’t stop a determined criminal but it might deter him long enough that he looks elsewhere.
- Nutinelse2doExplorerWe never lock our basement doors. More damage will be done with a crowbar or screwdriver.
We have left our rig for days at a time, and don’t give it a second thought. Much ado about nothing.
That’s what insurance is for.
When we had our 5’r, we would put a hitch lock on it though. - BizmarksMomExplorerI use a hitch lock, put my stuff away (I have a pretty minimal camp, so no big deal), and go enjoy myself. It hasn't been a problem.
- GrandpaKipExplorer IIAs others have said, years of camping, nothing missing. If a determined thief, not a meth head, wants your stuff or your camper, there’s not much you can do about it. They will have the tools to make short shrift of any security measures.
For any valuables left in the camper, I have a hidey hole that would be missed unless the thief started to take the cabinets apart.
I leave the hatches unlocked as it would be easier to replace the stuff inside than the damage caused by a forced entry.
Don’t worry, be happy. Go enjoy your camper. - drsteveExplorerTo steal yout TT the thieves first have to get past the campground office, which usually requires either a vehicle pass showing you're camped there, or telling the person in the booth who you're there to visit. Then they have to select their target, unhook it from utilities, raise the jacks, put the awning and slide room in, hitch up, and go. They are doing this in daylight, in front of other campers, hoping the entire time that the owner doesn't return.
I don't worry about it... - ScottGNomadMore than 30 years of RVing and I have never seen or worried about someone taking the rig.
I just wouldn't worry about it. - TakamineExplorerThe only theft I ever dealt with at a campground was from those pesky raccoons taking food that wasn't put away.
- DougEExplorerThe hitch lock is better than a padlock through the tongue lever due to the proliferation of battery-powered tools with abrasive wheels. Mainly you want something to slow them down to the point someone will sound the alarm. The devices that lock the wheels to the springs are even better.

A criminal set up to steal a trailer, can get a hitch lock off in a lot less than 10hrs.
A half-a%# criminal is far more likely to just pry the doors open and grab whatever looks valuable. - GeoffW90Explorer

in 26 years of camping, I've never had a problem. I lock the doors and use a hitch lock. My generator is chained to a tree and there is nothing of real value inside; Oh........ and I have insurance.
Ditto for us... Camped across Canada and the Northern USA with not an issue. Lock up the easy stuff to go, like the generator, and lock the door and hitch and enjoy.
