Travel Trailer Weight w/ My Truck

I have a question regarding how much my truck can tow and if the trailer my wife and I are looking at purchasing will work.

I have a 2016 F-150 w/ 5.0 V-8 Crew Cab w/ 6-1/2' bed and max tow package. The stickers off my door say:

  • I agree your likely going to be fine.

To figure it for sure you're gonna need a few more bits of info. The place most people get in trouble is with the cargo carrying number.

What is the approximate weight of the people that will be in the truck with you when you go camping?
What is the approximate weight of the stuff you will be putting in the camper?
What is the approximate weight of what you will be putting in the truck bed or cab of the truck?

Here's the formula you need to figure out.

    1677 (Cargo/occupants/tongue weight maximum).
    Subtract occupants weight
Subtract Cargo in bed and cab of truck
Subtract tongue weight (generally acceptable to plan for 15% of total trailer weight after loading) so 5595 + 420 (full water tank) + whatever the weight of the stuff you will load in the camper.

You will have to verify the tongue weight, trailer weight, truck weight on scales to make sure your not over.
  • The short answer is yes, you'll be fine. Get a WD hitch, hook up, and go camping!
  • How much can your TV lift? (Payload) Pulling a TT is not usually the issue. In pounds what will be in the truck?
