My suggestion - Chestertown is on the east side of Chesapeake Bay. Head north on local roads to I95 to the NJ Turnpike. Near Woodbridge NJ, take I287 to the NY Thruway north to I84 to the Mass Turnpike, then I495 around Boston to join I95 into New Hampshire and Maine.
Zero low bridges or tunnels on this route.
I'll second this route.
I95 through NYC is a gamble with traffic. When there is no traffic, you speed up and your TT will bounce all over the place. Odd hours (night, etc) there is usually construction.
I don't like towing our 21ft TT through NYC, and avoid it if at all possible.
Having said that... I84 can be rough, as can be I495. Okay, all the highways in New England! lol. Massachusettes has come weird aversion to re-paving bridges - the highway will be beautifully paved right up to a bridge, then your TT will bounce over your truck going over the bridge.
Having said that that... Have fun! Let us know how the trip goes.
x3 . good advice .
FYI...if you need to (due to an accident closure etc ) , I use the Garden State Pkwy in NJ towing my trailers . NJ has an RV clause (incls. privately owner, not for hire comm. veh.) to allow it. It overrides commercial restrictions.
from Toms River to the NY state border is the section I tow.
Even though its the shorter route, I never use 95 anymore. I cracked two TT hitches and cracked my snowmobile trailers frame going across GW bridge and the Cross-Bronx Expwy. portion of rt 95.
rt 287 to rt 87 in NY , again,as soon as you cross into NY from NJ, if you experience a closure here, you can cut east on rt 287 to rt 684 North. It is commercial and I have very good luck using this route as well. It just offers you a backup plan. (being from NY, you learn to have backup plans :) )
I use rt 684 to 84 across to Hartford , Conn. Try not to hit Hartford at rush hour. Even though it's hours better than sitting in NYC smog, it still backs up in Hartford.
BTW, I have been told the Cabela's in E. Hartford, the free rv dump station is now closed.(it was listed on Sanidumps.com)
The TC guys have VG posts about Maine: here are 2, you can google more if interested. "rv.net, Maine"
