Tricks for keeping restless passenger happy while towing?

Trailering is great, except for one little problem -- we go slower than other vehicles, so it takes us longer to get to faraway places, which means that if your passenger is not content to sit still for long periods of time, you have a grumpy passenger. Not good.

For myself, I'm the driver, so I'm entertained by the act of driving a tow vehicle -- much more demanding than regular driving. No problem with boredom and restlessness for me!

But DW is accustomed to getting several hours of physical activity every day. Eight or ten hours of sitting are difficult for her. Listening to the radio or reading are not enough -- too sedentary.

Once in a while, she will undo her seatbelt and fetch something from the back seat -- but that hardly qualifies as exercise.

And of course she walks around vigorously every time we stop for gas. Not enough.

So I have come up with the solution that NASA uses to keep the astronauts in shape -- bungee cords! She will hold the handles, loop the cord around one foot and then the other, and stretch and push to her heart's content.

This is what the StretchMaster looks like:

We haven't tried it yet -- we will see if it makes any difference.

If you have come up with other solutions to this common problem, I am open to suggestions!!

  • “Eight or ten hours of sitting are difficult for her.“

Why are you a road warrior? Join the 230/2:30 club. Stop at 230 miles or 2:30 p.m. and enjoy your campground most of the afternoon.
  • When my wife uses an exercise device, I will buy a lottery ticket. :)

We just keep our drives short, about 8 hours or 300 miles, lots of stops and tourist traps.

The wife sews, quilts, tats lace and most important, navigates. My job is to drive, snack and find suitable entertainment of the satellite radio.

I never marathon drive when towing.
  • We have used these

  • We have friends that own a cabin near ours who live over 8 hours away. When they come to the cabin, they leave their house at 2am, she sleeps most of the way, and they arrive, unload, open up camp just in time for lunch.
  • My wife and the dog are the same way...and I have a grumpy back so 10 hr. drives are out.

We just don't do the marathon drives. Leisure pack up and leave mid morning and we are at our next destination mid afternoon...

We are vacationing. Vacationing is suppose to be fun and relaxing..Driving (towing) for 10+ hours everyday is not relaxing for us.
