Where I live regular is $2.66 and diesel is $3.31. That's more than a 20% spread so the better diesel mpg is offset by the price difference.
We tow a 7500 GVW horse trailer so our next truck will a Dodge 6.4 3500 with the 4:10 rear end.
I'm ready to pull the trigger on a 6.4, but I can't find any at the dealers with the 4.10's just 3.73's given my trailer weight around the same 7500lbs wet, would I be making a mistake with 3.73's??
plenty of 14's with 3.73's around, if I want a truck with 4.10's I'm looking at ordering a 2015 and losing the $4k rebate.
I tow 8500lb TT plus a truck full of firewood, people, etc. with Hemi 6.4 and 3.73 gears. The last time I went through the scales I was at about 17,500# total between the truck and trailer. Given the choice I would have gone for the 4.10 but as you're finding the 3.73s are all that are on the lots.
I have no regrets at all. Granted, I've never tried the other gears so I don't really know what I'm missing but I don't think it's as drastic as everyone makes it out to be. For the weight you are talking about towing I'd just take the gearing you can get the best deal on.
The main thing the gears will change is the shift points and what RPMs you're at in certain gears. I can tell you I've hauled my trailer up steep mountain passes and can pretty much go as fast as I want. 2nd gear is a beast from about 40-60mph. The 1-2 gap is big and really my only annoyance with the truck but I've heard similar complaints from people with the 4.10s. It's just a large gap and when it shifts to 2nd on a steep hill there's more of a lag that I'd like before the engine gets back to the meaty part of the power. Coming from a diesel this is bit of a downer but it's very infrequent and not a deal breaker. I'd buy the same truck over again in an instant.
