Trip Report - Our first outing in the Lance
The wife and I took our “new to us” Lance out for the first time this past weekend. I added stable loads to the truck a couple weeks back. The first test drive with the camper the truck had quite a bit of squat and some sway. Now it’s much better. Instead of 4 inches of squat it’s now down to 2 inches. The truck and camper handled very well on our short 55 mile drive to the campground.
We decided to try a campground we’d never been to before for our maiden voyage. Charlestown State Park is in Southern Indiana on the Ohio River, 20 minutes East of the Louisville area. It used to be a Military site where they made gun powder for WWII, the Korean war, Vietnam and the cold war era. Many of the 100’s of buildings are still standing but of course off limits.
This is our site campsite. Site number 144. Many of the sites on this side of the campground are pretty private with natural growth around three sides. The campground also has larger sites in other areas, some with even with full hookups.
Back in the 20’s and 30’s there was an amusement park/resort on the property name Rose Island. The great flood of 1937 wiped it all out. Today there are still some rock formations and iron laying around. The Olympic sized pool is still there and holding water.
These three rock pillars held a large iron sign and lights. They were the entrance to the park from the river where the steamboats would drop off the guest. This led up to the hotel and cottage area.
The poles that held up the lights were still laying on the ground near the rock pillars.
This is the Olympic sized pool. There was a small fence around it to discourage swimmers.
This is the mighty dog enjoying the truck A/C after walking four miles of trails.
Overall it was a great time and we look forward to more time in this camper as well as a trip to Yellowstone next year.
