Yes, Nissan calls the Titan XD a 3/4 ton and the Titan a 1/2 ton. The XD is just like Fords SD and Ram/GM's HD. The XD is just a lighter 3/4 ton by today's standards, but is has the same ratings as 3/4 tons about 10-15 years ago.

The Nissan Titan XD is not a "1/2 ton" per its GVWR which is what determines if is a "1/2 ton" or "3/4 ton". In fact, it has a GVWR 8,600-8,990 lbs depending on the configuration which just 210 lbs less than 9,200 lbs GVWR of a 2009 GM 2500HD. My friends 2002 GM 2500HD has a GVWR of 8,600 lbs. Is his is 2500HD considered a "1/2 ton"?

Told ya so. 1/2 ton diesel just a bad idea IMO. Most get used as commute vehicles/grocery getters which is not great for a DPF equipped truck. These DPF diesel motors need to be worked. Those that get worked seem to have less emissions related issues.

Well sounds like some trouble for that particular truck for sure. The only problem that I have personally heard of was from a coworker who just dumped his due to transmission issues and poor fuel mpgs. I'm not sure how long the XD version will stay around. It's kinda a cross between a 1/2 ton and possibly a 3/4 ton but has very low payload. I really don't see it being better then some current 1/2 ton offerings with more payload. I thought someone bought one on this forum, maybe they can chime in on there experience. I have said it before about these new diesels with all the emissions, they can be so problematic and expensive to own. That's the main reason I'm avoiding ownership. Some guys have had zero emission issues while others get a fair share of them. I just love having no issues with the ole gas jobs, granted I'm not flying up the hills at 75 mph, but have zero issues climbing and getting there when I want to.

I like the idea of a small diesel in a 1500 - something designed to get great MPG, and be up to the tasks that the vast majority of truck buyers need. NOT something that is designed/marketed to tow.

In my mind, the Titan XD is in no-man's land. The 5.0 is too big, so that it doesn't get great MPG (in fact, at 15 MPG in the test, it is similar to either a 5.7 Hemi or a 3.5 EcoBoost), while at the same time is too small to have real power - I'd be willing to bet that the top engine of any of the Big 3 (or the Tundra for that matter) will out pull it.

The Titan just missed the mark, regardless of wether this reported reliability is normal or not.

I think it would all depend on one's needs.

A close friend has a Dodge 1500 with a V-6 diesel and loves it.

He tows his 5th-wheel and his RZR behind the 5th-wheel with a V-10 Ford. He loves both trucks.

Zero issues with my previous 2011 diesel in the 110k miles I had it and so far I have 23k miles and zero issues on this one. I don't think you can drive the new diesels around town, they need to be worked and run for a long time to keep from clogging.

Seems to be all too common with diesel pickups. What is really annoying is with all the computer "gadgetry", they are still not smart enough to tell the techs what the problem is. Throw in the typical lack of engineering principles used to write software, and a you have real recipe for issues.
My F250 has had a couple of instances of clogged DPF and limp mode issues that nobody seems to be able to diagnose.
