Truck camper alternatives

I went to the local RV show yesterday and was very impressed by the quality of a 30ft rv in the 70k ish price range. If I cant find a new Host camper in my price range, I will venture toward that direction.

So for those who have left the truck camper category, which model or class did you go to?
  • We have had two truck campers over the the years with trailers in between. We recently switched to a 24 foot Sprinter based MH. We like it.

The TC's were hard to beat. Very efficient, mobile and worked really well. Our most recent TC was an Outfitter Apex 8.0 that we used for 450+ nights.

The reason we went with the Thor 24 H/L is that we wanted more comfort, more room, more conveniences.

  • Each camping style calls for different RV.
When we had family of 5 going for a week to the lake - bus conversion was unbeatable.
TT is perfect if you drive shorter distance and stay in the place for days.
Lately with our retirement we want to see more, while for 2 of us TC has all the space we need.
Also TT will cost you much more with registration and maintenance.
  • I grew up with a TC. When I decided to get an RV, that was my first choice.

Due to cost, I ended up starting with a small TT. It was fine for a few years, but wasn't really great for my style of traditional camping.

I ended up getting a 21ft class C. That has been much better. It gives me more room than the TC (they seemed a lot bigger when I was little), gave me a dry bath, and I didn't need to upgrade my daily driver to a large pickup.

Similar to the TC, I can fit into pretty much all my favorite camping sites. I'm not an RVer and don't stay at RV parks or do extensive city traveling. I tend to go into forests and camp in small to mid-size campgrounds. The 21ft C works great for that - easy to get along the roads and big enough to be comfortable.

I would look at your preferred travel/camping style and really think how a 30ft rig would affect that. For some, it makes no difference; for others, it would eliminate 75 percent or more of their favorites places.
