Truck Camper Cost

Ok now that my truck camper experience is concluded I'm reflecting on costs and other things.

2004 Lance Lite 915 purchased in November 2003 for About $15,000 Sorry don't remember exact price.

2003 Chevy Duramax 2500HD regular cab truck purchased in November 2002 MSRP $38,344.00 (still have the window sticker) Paid about $29,000 sorry don't remember exact price but brother was able to get me a great discount.

So my rigs total cost new was about $44,000.

Traded truck for my new Jeep they gave me $9,000. Plus another $2,000 discount just because they were sweet.:) Or having a hard time selling Jeep Patriots.
Sold camper on my own for $8,500.

So my ten years of camper ownership and eleven years of truck ownership cost about $26,500 or about $2600 a year in deprecation only.

The truck had 180,000 miles and many new parts I'm sure glad it's gone.

The camper had lots of upkeep but I kind of miss it. My better half does not!
We spent 4 months in the Camper during the winter once and she developed a dislike for it.

Now thinking about value for the money:

My TC with me in it spent at least a night in the above colored in places.

My Truck was used for at least half of it's 180,000 miles for things other than carrying the camper. So the truck was worth it despite it's appetite for parts and expensive smelly diesel oil.

I retired in 2006 and turned 70 this year so needs/wants change. We are looking forward to trips in our 30 mpg cheap gas jeep. Plus having someone else make the beds cook the food and clean the bathroom is always fun.

Considering our $44,000 in 2002 the use we have had. The new vehicle we now have,
for just that original amount we are ( On Edit: VERY )pleased.

Yes we have a few good memories.

RVnet and you good people are a hoot and something I don't want to give up.

If the camping bug bites me again I may have one of these.
Mine will most likely be on a small trailer though, getting too old to fall off my jeeps roof.

On Edit:
I Was Not trying to tell anyone what they should do.
Merely reporting on my TC experience.

Should have said outright that we feel it was very worth it.

We have stayed in Hotels from Russia to Hawaii and have had great to good experiences.
My working life required travel on occasion so airplanes and hotels are not an unknown.
If you've had poor experiences I'm sorry but I just can't relate to them.
Besides I was working for Boeing when I retired.

Please don't think I am trying to convince anyone to give up or not buy a Truck Camper.
It was a great experience for us.

  • IMHO your going to miss the beautiful places you can actually wake up in vs the cookie cutter motel rooms. Spent most of my working life moving from one motel room to another and lots and lots of time in airports and airplanes. Don't miss that phase of my life one bit. Today is my birthday, we have been homeless for exactly two months today, and I cannot be happier. DW wants another house, but I am resisting as long as possible. I now have money to do things, go places and see this wonderful country of ours. All while I have my own bed, my own food. If I get bored it is pretty easy to pick up and move to someplace different. God has put me on this earth for a certain period of time. What I make of that and who I can serve in the process is way more important than the few dollars it costs me to own and live in my RV.
But I am glad you have made the decision to motel it for now. If that is what you actually want to do.
