Truck Camper Insurance

Sorry if this is a common topic, but I did a search and did not find anything.

I'm curious to hear about your insurance coverage on your truck camper. My previous auto insurance company, The Traveler's said I just needed a rider on my truck as part of my auto policy to cover my camper. If the camper was being carried on my truck it was covered, and parked at home, covered under my homeowner's policy. So, my total insurance was very inexpensive.

Then I switched to Allstate and they told me the above was not true and that it needed to be added to my auto policy individually, not just as a rider on my truck. I have a 2013 Lance 1050S and this is costing me about $450 per year here in the state of Texas.

Wondering why I got different stories from different agents/companies and how that compares with some of you?

Thanks.
  • I carry a separate policy on the TC with no deductibles. It costs me about $200 a year.

The easiest thing to do is use any search bar , type 'rvnet....truck camper insurance' or whatever topic you want info on. That's how I got all these. There are many more.

anytime you want to learn about most tc stuff, look at the members projects page here :

  • We have Allstate and camper is a rider on the truck, (though a rider it is explicitly covered). Though Im sure there are area, state differences, might talk to a different agent to verify? Amount sounds rather high to me also but depends on coverage, covering loan etc?.
  • I visualize a lot of different scenarios beyond "on my truck" and "in my driveway" so I cover with a separate policy. $450 seems kind of high to me.
  • My experience. Most of the insurance brokers I talked to (and I live in the Northwest) really didn't understand truck campers. I got the: "covered under your auto policy when on the truck - its cargo, homeowners when off" story from some. I asked them if I transported a $75,000 dollar grand piano would it be covered and they started to back down. One broker tried to cover it as a separate rider as a travel trailer. When I called PEMCO the broker instantly knew what I was talking about and their computer had a policy form right on the "pull down" menu. My policy explicitly says "truck camper", names the brand, make, serial # value etc just like a car.

If you read through posts you will see some people have had good claim experience with the "covered by this on truck and this off the truck" policy and others have not. My suggestion is to be sure it is explicitly stated, in writing, on your policy what your coverage is.

I personally feel much better have it explicitly covered.
  • I've been insurance shopping lately for my new TT and TV. Apparently, different companies have different methods of dealing with a camper. Allstate will add it to our current policy. Progressive said the camper needs to be in a policy of its own. And I'm sure it varies from state to state.
