Truck Camper Mileage (Question Answered)

I thought it might be helpful to those wondering about truck camper mileage to post this.

I have a 2002 Dodge Ram 2500 Cummins turbodiesel.

I get exactly 10 miles to the gallon with the Arctic Fox TC in the bed and...

Exactly 15 miles to the gallon without.

So an average TC will reduce your fuel economy roughly 33%.
  • Ram 3500 SRW, Mega Cab, 4x4, 6.4 Hemi, 3.73 axle ratio.
On my trip from Missouri to New Hampshire empty to pick up camper MPG 16.05, hand calculated 1382 mile trip.
This past summer with our Ascent by Chalet S85R camper loaded we took a 5775 mile trip to California and averaged 9.84 MPG. There were a few days we had camper off during trip to go site seeing.
  • I should probably mention I do 70-80 on highways with or without the TC and posted speed limit off the highway in either case.
  • I recently drove from Baltimore to the Outfitter factory near Denver. GMC 2500 6.6 diesel, with 150,000 miles on it. Going out in 4 days I kept the rpms down ~1500, 60mph, and got almost 19mpg. Going east at 70-75mph, 16+mpg. Not bad for pushing 5 tons of steel down the road.
  • Yah, I'll get apx 11 mpg unloaded
    9.5 with camper on it...

12 mpg going downhill, heheh or better...

Full timing for 3+ yrs now, I just figure 9.5 mpg... rarely is the camper off.
  • 33-percent loss on mileage sounds about right.
It would be interesting to see/know how the percentage would change with different miles-per-hour speeds.

Perhaps calculated over a minimum distance of 10,000 miles?
  • MPG is highly dependent on speed/wind/mtn/elevation/gearing. My unloaded mpg is pretty bad. On the plus side, it barely goes down with TC added. My normal mpg with TC is 11-12. My previous truck got as much as 15. It was a 6.0 SRW.

It would be cool to do a prescribed loop at a prescribed speed and test these numbers out. :)
  • I get 11.9-12.2 MPG with my camper on and 20+ MPG running empty. I very seldom run empty. My overall MPG for 63,378 miles (last fill up) is 11.95 MPG. I live full time in my unit. I pull an 18 foot long, 8.5 foot wide, 10 foot tall enclosed tandem axle car hauler and usually don't drive over 60 MPH. Going 65 MPH on a 2200 mile trip with my truck camper and trailer dropped my mileage to 9.1 MPG. (I needed to be somewhere with a very short notice.)
