I agree, Bedlam. The best way to have variables, hands down, is a Flat Bed. The biggest drawback is the same for backpacking. The bigger the backpack, the more you are going to carry with you. Or, at least the temptation is there.
For me, I bought my truck during the time the manufacturers were giving huge incentives to keep their production lines running. Essentially my service bed and other upfittings were paid for with the almost $15k rebate that came with my truck.
If one really considers a Utility Bed they need to begin with a larger truck. Now I have viewed and photographed some UB on an F250/2500. One needs to weigh the reasons one needs to have a UB. Such as a large family, big recreation needs like maintaining off road vehicles or full-timing. Do you want one or do you need one? Or will a Flat Bed with Storage Cabinets meet your needs?
