It went from what seemed like a tiny fire to a big one in a matter of seconds. I tried to get the hood open but it was too hot to get to the latch underneath where the plastic grill was burning.
All my life I have made it a point, unless the hood was at risk of damage when open, I always make a point to have the hood open, just as a indication somebody might be moving around outside that vehicle, and not watching other traffic.
