I can go to DMV and register my truck, LEGALLY, for a weight higher than what the door sticker says. As long as I'm within my registered weight, then I won't get an overweight ticket.
No state I know will allow you to register a pick up higher then the GVWR on the door tag. You can register at a lower to save money on states that charge by GVW of vehicle.
If you can modify and prove an increase in GVWR and get your door tag changed, and registration I would like to see that...

If the manufacturer's shipping weight is disputable or unavailable, the applicant may be required to have the car weighed on a certified scale under Title 39:3-8. This weight will be considered the manufacturer's shipping weight.
Non-commercial trucks
The fee is based on the vehicle's gross weight.
