Last September, I bought a gasser but I certainly understand the appeal of a diesel. To each their own based on their situation, but either way, the dickering and the games played by salesmen is something that makes my blood boil. I just don't have the patience for it. So when I was looking for a new truck, I wasn't loyal to any brand but I did limit myself to the big 3. I knew what I had to have and what I wanted to have and then started my search. I found trucks from all 3 brands that I would buy. I then figured out what the invoice price was for each truck (easier said than done) and researched what my trade was worth. When I had all the numbers written down, I went to the dealerships. This is what I said to the salesman when he walked up and introduced himself. "Hi, I'm Rob. Before we go any further, you should know that I'm too old and have little patience anymore, so I won't be here very long. I know which truck I'm interested in and what I'll pay for it. I also know what I will accept for my trade in so go get your sales manager". When the sales manager arrived and we introduced ourselves, I said, "I'm going to buy a new truck today. Are you interested in selling one?" then I said, "you have one shot because I don't have all day. I'm interested in that truck right over there. I know what the invoice price is and I'll give you $200 over that. My trade in is worth this much, and I won't take a dime less. I want all of the rebates that are being offered. Both the manufacturer to customer and the manufacturer to dealer. I already know you will get a manufacturer kickback on this sale, so you can make $200 plus that and sell me that truck or I'm buying one somewhere else". Most managers replied with "well let me check the numbers and I'll be right back" or some silly nonsense similar to that. When that happened, I said "Never mind. You already know exactly what the owner will sell that truck for and you just told me you don't want to sell me that truck for what I'm willing to pay so I won't waste any more of your time" and out the door I went. It took 9 dealerships before I bought my truck. It was a small dealership in a town of about 4,500 people. As I was speaking to the sales manager, the owner came out and joined the manager. He Introduced himself and said, "I overheard what you were saying to my sales manager. You are well prepared and have a unique approach". I replied that "I've played the game when buying a vehicle and honestly, I don't like it". He said to the sales manager "Take his vehicle and appraise it". 15 minutes later, the Sales Manager returned, handed the appraisal to the owner and the owner said "If your credit checks out, we have a deal". I said, "My credit is better than most so that won't be a problem and I expect to get that 1.9% financing being offered". He started laughing, shook his head and just said. "ok, but don't you want to test drive the truck first?" I said, "Nope, you get everything written up and ready for me to sign the papers and THEN I'll test drive it". I ended up buying a 2015 Chevy 2500HD double cab. When I came the next day to pick it up, the owner came back out to talk to me and said, "I just want to tell you that in nearly 25 years of being in the car business, I've never met a customer quite like you". I laughed and said "and you probably never will again".
