Truck registration in California

I have a 2012 F350 DRW which I bought used in February. The registration was still valid, so I didn't have to pay for it at the time. It was registered with commercial plates and a max GVWR of 10K (which is obviously too low now).

So now I got the renewal and it is $555. How are other forum members from California registering your trucks? Is it possible to do something else and save some $. I'm trying to avoid the inevitable confusing runaround I will get if I call the DMV. Is there a non-commercial option that is cheaper?
  • Looks like the DMV rules might allow you to register your truck noncommercial. Details here.
  • You can put non commercial plates on your truck and it will be a lot cheaper but if you are caught hauling a can of beans in the bed or hauling your trailer around it is a BIG fine.

It is what it is. Your choice.

Here is a kicker for you. My buddy has a Vega panel. (you know, a station wagon with steel panels where the back windows are. You guessed it..............the powers that be in Kalifornia says it's a truck!! No BS........he has to reg it as a truck!
