That low first gear is nice in a 2wd truck. If I didn't have the 2-speed transfer case of my 4wd, I would definitely miss having a creeper gear for low speed precise maneuvers. Skipping granny gear on starts is no different than locking out overdrive on heavy tows - Sometimes you don't need either extreme, but it makes the truck more functional when you have a wider spread of ratios available. With today's multi geared automatics there's no reason not to have a creeper/granny gear that only engages under heavy load or manual override.
