First thing is read your owners manual of your F150 and it will help you understand the function of the Tow/Haul mod of the transmission. Essentially, if you are in T/H mode and going down hill, each time you hit the brakes, the trans will downshift.. Before you know it, you'll be in 2nd gear pulling around 5000 rpms and going 20 mph....
Towing the grades is easy, as long as you understand how your engine, trans and brakes, including the trailer brakes all work together.
Like you said, it's mostly 'life experience' in learning it.. Reading what others suggest on the internet isn't gospel either..
I use T/H mode on and off depending on the grade. Sometimes I just hit the brake controller to activate just the trailer brakes. Or I hit the brakes hard to slow down to a much slower speed, let off the brakes and let it gain it's speed back, but this is also allowing the brakes to cool down in between times.
The biggest thing that causes the brakes to overheat is riding them lightly for minutes at a time... That'll smoke the brakes a lot faster than anything.
