Tundra Tundra camper compatibility

I should elaborate a little here... The vast majority of the time this camper will sit on my private land along the river. I will only pull it from there to my house (2 miles) and to winter storage (7 miles)

Have you looked at the payload capacity of your particular Tundra? They could be pretty low.

payload likely going to get you. that said might be good enough that you can get away with it if its never really going anywhere.
ride home is going to suck.

payload-tongue weight-cargo-wd hitch > 0 OK < 0 no dice.

remember tongue weight should be roughly 13 percent of loaded trailer. also keep in mind dry weight means nothing. I tow with a half ton with more "towing capacity" than that and I would assume more payload, still wouldn't want that much trailer for my truck.

Depends on what you mean by "vast majority of the time" ... for just picking it up and towing it home your truck would be empty, with only you in it, so yeah I'd do it. However, if you intend to tow this trailer at all as you would to go camping then there's no way, it's just too heavy and it's gross tongue weight with the trailer loaded & ready to camp would be just too great.

You may want to check how much weight your hitch receiver is rated for as you will likely have over 1000 lbs hitch weight. Did your calculations inckude a WDH hitch? You may make the 5 hour drive home, but it will take longer for your butt to un-pucker.

Check cargo capacity on the driver's side jamb. With only the driver, that's your limit for payload or tongue weight. 13% of the trailer's gross weight is in a good range for towing. It might be more or less. 8153 lbs sounds like a brochure weight or it might be when it left the Mfg. In all events it will be slightly more.

You're looking at an estimated tongue weight of 1050 lbs to 1100 lbs. Check your hitch ratings. if it is 1000 lbs, in some situations, at 1100 Lbs, I would try it. Make sure you have a good WDH when towing to move some weight back to the front axle. If you have the time, load the Tundra with 1100 lbs., in the bed, close to the tail gate. Drive the truck to observe the handling. In any event, you will be close to the towing capacity of the truck and will not enjoy the limits it places on driving. A one time tow to a private camping spot, OK. Taking a long trip to the West Coast, no.

Good luck with whatever works out with a trailer!

Rent a 3/4 ton truck twice a year. That will be better for your truck and you can save the cost of a WDH to pay for the truck rentals.

Never would I recommend that combination for recreational towing. For your proposed short and infrequent trips, your truck will likely not have much excessive wear because of it. The rear suspension will cry without a WDH.

The Tundra is overbuilt and just like a 3/4 diesel, it can handle more than its ratings, so for that particular situation you should be fine...Tow it.

I always wondered why Toyota never built a 3/4 ton. They should just stick 2500 emblems on it and raise the price $4K.
OTOH I wonder why the Tundra always comes in dead last in towing comparisons.
