turn on 4wd high

Just a question when I'm towing on mountains roads uphill I slow down of course gas engine, just wondering when I drop to around 40 or less would it help to turn on the 4 wheel drive in high mode to have the front wheels help pull?

  • Thanks everyone. I've only used 4wd in the snow and ice or on gravel when slipping. not sure how I came up with that question, too much time before we leave for our 6 month trip.

What problem are you attempting to solve with pitting it in 4wd?
  • The answer to your question is no. Read your owners manual's 4 wheel drive section for help understanding. As has been said, 4x4 should only be used on gravel, ice, or snow. Never on dry pavement.
  • The only time I've ever used 4HI is when it's super icy and I want to roll down a hill at about 2MPH w/o putting the brakes.

I could also see using it in wet grass or loose gravel to try and gain traction - like pulling out a stuck vehicle or trailer. Realistically, there's not a lot of use for it with everyday driving.
  • Use 4wd on dry pavement if you are trying to convince your wife you need a new truck; cause in short order you will.
  • No, 4WD is for use on dirt roads and such which allow the tires to slip as needed. Using it on a paved road will ruin your tires.

Check your vehicles manual it will have warnings about this.
  • I only put my rig in 4 wheel drive if there is a chance that my rear tires my not hold the grip of the road. Never for more power.

    NOT on a DRY road!!!
Extremely wet or snow yes, but dry NO!

If you don't like slowing down going up a hill, either get a stronger gas engine, or a diesel!
