I have the typical crank-up rotatable âTâ shaped antenna you see in the TT camp grounds. I believe they are made by Winegaurd.
In 6 different camp grounds near major cities, we have only been able to pick up a signal twice and then only one or two of the many stations.
This is our first outing with this trailer and I was wondering if these antennas are poor performers or has something worked loose in the wiring?
Are you "re scanning" your tuner?
With the advent of our lovely digital ATSC broadcasts the channels do not necessarily match the actual frequencies. ATSC uses what is known as "virtual" channels, the channels kept their old channel "name" but are often broadcast on a DIFFERENT channel frequency. The tuner scans and finds the virtual channel and assigns the proper old analog channel in order.
How that works is analog channel 2 is no longer broadcast on the old analog 2 frequency. Instead it may be broadcast on say 25 UHF but the tuner will show it as channel 2.1 (the .1, .2, .3 are the digital sub channels).
The problem with this is if you go outside that broadcast area Channel 2 may be broadcast on say UHF 40.
Clear as mud?
Yep, basically once there WAS actual broadcast "standards" which allowed a tuner to work EVERY WHERE without any fuss. Now, with no real standards you have to scan, rescan, rescan, rescan every time you move outside a broadcast area...
And, rescan some more. I've found I have to rescan if I move just 20 feet across the park. And, I pick up different channels setting just 20 feet from where I was too.
