TV for Jayco Jay Feather 197

Hi,

My husband and I are in the beginning stages of acquiring a new TT and TV. We've pretty well decided the Jayco Jay Feather 197 is the right trailer for us. Now we are looking for a tow vehicle. The 197 numbers are:
GVWR 4750 lbs
Dry hitch 620 lbs
Those are the only numbers I can find for the unit other than the unloaded weight.

My husband is currently looking into a GMC Sierra 1500 with a 4.3L V6 engine with I believe 2WD (could be wrong about the 2WD). Their website shows a
max GVWR 6900 lbs
max conventional trailering 6000 lbs
front gross axle weight rating 3600 lbs
rear gross axle weight rating 3950 lbs

I understand enough to know that we need to look at GVWR and hitch numbers, but no real comprehension of what everything means. So here I am to ask all of you knowledgeable people out there if this vehicle would work with that trailer.

It's just my husband and I. Perhaps grandchildren in the future (they'd be small, lol). We camp at full-hookup sites so will not be carrying water. We will take trips of about a week, so fairly light cargo. I'm not into bringing a ton of equipment with us when we go out. Between us we weigh 400 lbs.

Can anyone help me with that? I'd sure appreciate it.

  • As an aside, you should always carry some water in your fresh tank for emergencies ie; Campground water going out, on the road potty stops, etc.

  • If you go 4x4 you get 3.73 rear axle ratio and the tow rating goes up to about 7000 lbs.

The new 4.3 is going to make a great Tow Vehicle for many folks. With its TQ rating over 300 lb ft.

If you all have not bought a truck yet I would strongly suggest checking out the Ram 1500 with the new 3.6 v6. You get the Amazing 8 speed and with 3.55 rear axle ratio you get over 7000 lb tow rating. And still get 23 MPG empty.

But, with your trailer any of the new 6cyl half tons will do more than fine with the tow packages.

Good luck in your decision and welcome to RV.net

    Thanks!

  • Thank you, I'll check it out. I know the numbers can be deceiving and sure enough I just found an extensive GMC trailering guide that shows a different more detailed set of numbers per model. It looks like we would need to look at a different model.
  • I'm sure you'll get lots of input from knowledgeable folks, but here's a good place to start since you've got some numbers. It's a calculator at the Changing Gears website that helps to determine the compatibility of tug/tow combos. Just load your numbers in and click "calculate".

    Good luck, and happy hunting!
