My brother has a 2014 Highlander hybrid. We do not plan on towing with it upon advice from the dealer. In fact, the dealer would not install the trailer wiring harness (I guess its a dealer installed item) even though it was ordered with the tow package and came with a receiver. Towing lightweight trailers, if they are full profile, causes the motor controller to overheat and shut-down.
I find that interesting. Never knew that there would be a controller that would shut down, if towing a too large (surface area) trailer.
But I'm not surprised in this modern day. One of our formerly owned cars...which we just traded in about a month ago was a Toyota Matrix 1.8 liter 4 banger. Now I certainly wouldn't recommend even thinking about towing anything with this and we didn't.
But about 2 months ago the speedometer stopped working....due to a sensor...then very shortly after that...the car's automatic transmission started to shift erratically...so much so that we had it towed into the garage.
After the $$$ sensor was replaced....the speedo started working and the transmission started shifting well again. I'm not sure why this two dysfunctions happened together and disappeared after the sensor was replaced.
I do wonder if with today's cars, if that functions are programmed to cease if there are electronic issues ?
