Based on kennethwooster's answer above, one based on personal experience, I would conclude that diesel exhaust does not pose the same level of danger as gasoline exhaust which is what I wanted to know. I'm a retired firefighter. Besides whatever nasty stuff I was exposed to in burning buildings, back in the day scant attention was given to apparatus exhaust ventilation of apparatus bays in fire stations. Regardless of climate, trucks are often started and idling inside the bay while the crews dress out and board them. Over time, all that idling can turn the walls and ceiling black with soot. In the latter part of my career, my department built new stations with 'air locks' between the apparatus bay and living quarters and used sophisticated vent systems in the apparatus bay that attached exhaust hoses to the apparatus exhaust pipes that vented exhaust out of the bay and detached automatically when the apparatus moved. Similar systems are also commonplace in auto dealership repair facilities.
