The "dead horse" argument has its limit in real life.
We do warn people about traffic accidents, yet millions of them happen every single day. Shall we stop?
So evaluate the risk. I am risk taker, but I "lost" utility trailer on turn 30 years ago. Nothing really happen and I was back on the road in 5 minutes, but that experience affected rest of my life.
So I can step on 6' cheap ladder, but you will not see me on anything below contractor grade in 25'+ size.
Elevators, not known to general public do have safety factor 6+ and triple brakes.
So use your imagination what will happen if the hitch extension bends on bump on dirt road - 20 miles from paved road where towing service will be happy to wait for you and 200 miles from home.
