Similar to the ideas of the OP I met a vehicle transporter that skipped buying the traditional 3/4 to 1 ton diesel truck and bought one of these MDT flat beds for less than 3K from farmer and mounted a gooseneck at the back of the bed and carries a car on the flatbed and 3-4 on the wedge trailer that he tows. I think it had the International 7.3l (or the DT466) he felt was slightly underpowered but I have seen him haul cars on several occasions.
