I am planning a July 2014 trip to south Utah for some ATV trail riding around the Bryce Canyon area. We will probably spend 6 or 7 days in the area.I am interested in any specific information someone might share concerning good places to camp that also have access to the trails.I have contacted via online email the Forest Service for information. I expect a lot of 'general' information from them.I have found many Internet sites advertising commercial services - not interested.There are many Internet sites for the government ATV trails also. At this juncture, I have information overload.I would appreciate a "been there, done that" response.Thanks - Jim

Going there in July you want the buzzards to come and find you on the trail somewhere :E.I think for that time of year I would go to Colorado and go for the high mountain passes there probably a little cooler. I might try to make the CO next year for some ATVing.Good Luck.Oh and congrats on that new truck looks great. Still going to have to get with you one of these days for a cup of coffee and a chat.

Funny you should ask......we are leaving this month to head out to southern Utah with our UTV. Its our first time out with the UTV. Been thru the area about 3 years ago but just drove thru. My wife bought a great book on Amazon listing many of the ATV/UTV/Jeep trails with descriptions, mile markers, degree of difficulty, nearby CGs etc, etc, etc. It looks like it will come in very handy for the trip. The book was written by a guy who ran the trails and then critiqued them. Its broken up into 4 areas(north,south, east, west) around Moab.

I don't have a lot of experience with Utah trails but I've done the trails around Ruby's Inn and I was not impressed. They were so "nice" they were no longer an ATV/UTV trail. I could've driven my truck camper down those roads.

There's group called ATV Utah they have nice website.Utah is on my list of places to go riding. Beaver claims to be the ATV capitol of the world.

We're headed there April 2014 as I've been wanting to ride the White Rim trail on the DRZ. It's a 200 mile loop that has no fuel so plan accordingly if you're ride it. To those who go, remember no write up with pictures, it didn't happen ;)

I read up on the "laws". Registration is required - UT & CO. There is some reciprocity, but I haven't checked our state yet. Not a whole lot of $$.

The wife and I ride a Honda Big Red UTV - 64" wide. For my 40 acres, I carry a chain saw. I am sure that would be frowned on riding on government land.

We have stayed at Ruby's Inn twice for riding and have enjoyed the experience. The close in trails are more like forest service roads but there are some great trails too just takes time to get to them and find them.

In August we went to Marysvale, UT for an entire week of riding and camping and loved it so much we already booked the same site for the same week in August 2014.

Moab area would be 100 degrees in July/August. The Piaute Trail system or the area around Rubys would be higher and cooler. The warmest weather we had was 92 staying in Marysvale this August....

The key for fun ATV riding is finding the 50'' or 60'' trails....

Look for riderplanet.com and Seiver (sp) County ATV info. They are very ATV friendly. Also try http://www.atvutah.com/southern/paiute.htm. Moab is also atv friendly, but wouldn't go there in the middle of summer. Many trails have a 50" inch width limit.

Stop at the Red Canyon Visitor Center and pick up the Dixie National forest recreation trail map. As you head towards Bryce Canyon you pas through a small town Panguitch, Utah. From here you can head into the back country behind Bryce Canyon and explore. There are some great views. You can also buy an atv map for the area from the visitor center. There is also BLM camping out side the town of Panguitch and there is a small campground on the reservoir.

I might just change this trip to the middle of September. Most of the reading I have done suggests September/October. Earlier than July, most of the mountain passes still have snow.
