Ok I'm not good with words and a key board but I'll try.
OK so your trailer weight is supported in 2 places, the axles and the hitch. The reason is because of were the axles are placed. Just behind the middle point of the trailer.
So now the axles should carry at least 90 % of the weight and the hitch 10 %
So just for easy math let's say that your trailer weights 1000 lbs. And 90% of the weight was on the axle which would be 900 lbs. So that would leave you whit a 100 lbs to be on the hitch.
So the hitch weight is only the percentage of the weight not carried by the trailers axles. It is usually somewhere between 10 and 15%.
