Buying new I'd probably negotiate from off-site and then drive out to get it. Used I'm planning to fly out and look it over and make the deal. Then drive and get it. I just can't imagine driving +/- 1000 miles only to find the thing smells like a big wet dog and a stale pack of Marlboros :)
Flying out/back, renting a car and a night in a hotel is around $500. Well worth it to save me the hassle of a long, useless drive.
