There are other factors that have to be taken into consideration when setting the tow ratings of trucks that have nothing to do with suspension and drivetrain.
Things like frame strength plays a very important part, cooling system (both engine & tranny),as well as type of wheels and also tires (P vs LT).
The weakest of all these components contributes to lower ratings as well.
For example the F150 HD payload package not only comes with bigger axles, but also a larger frame thickness as well, and LT tires with higher rated wheels.
