I tried to reproduce the effect yesterday. Two wheel high, four wheel high, one hub locked, the other locked, both locked; all smooth. I think I must have had a stone in one of the wheels where I didn't see it that came loose eventually.
I don't know if you've ever watched My Cousin Vinny or not but if you have maybe you had mud in your wheel.
I was going to mention that but thought, nah. I had it happen to me in the past.
