I agree, not much recourse unless you could somehow prove that he knew something about it. I feel that may be somewhat difficult and quite possibly more costly than repairing and moving on. Not trying to make light of a bad situation but on a positive note, when you have it all repaired, you will have a nice RV and in the process, you will gain a lot of knowledge about the construction of your unit. Wishing you the best with your repairs and hoping you are able to get it "camping" ready soon. I personally have been in situations before where I felt like a "friend" was dishonest or screwed me over...it sucks! Chock it up as a lesson learned and turn those lemons into lemon aide. It's really about all you can do unless you can get them to agree to pay for repairs (possible but not likely since the deal was private party and money has already traded hands) or if you feel you can prove something in court. :(
