I found them to be loud, dusty, harmful to the trails, obnoxious to neighbors, terrible if not illegal to drive on the highway, and expensive to maintain. I switched back to a jeep and have no regrets.

You needed to switch with who you ride. We have no problem taking a Sunday drive even if the day is not Sunday. Most open terrain is taken at around 25mph and slower if scenic.
I also have a street sport-tour motorcycle. I refuse to ride with the guys running loud pipes on their bikes and the ones that want scrape foot pegs on every turn. You just need to find the right group that fits your style.
