Yeah, I guess 2,500-3,500lbs is on the high side. I've been cruising eBay and some are around 1,500 lbs which this truck should be able to handle without issue.
This one is cute:

If I need overdrive, an RX-7 transmission will work but the early ones which are a direct fit are weak and the later ones from the turbo version require some cutting. I also heard that a later Mazda pickup transmission will work if I had the right bell housing. I'm not to worried about overdrive though. I've done some long trips with the truck empty and get 18 mpg cruising at 4,000 rpm. The engine just doesn't stress out at those rpms like a "boinger".
