From what I saw, butts were just as big. But when you only got 4-6 channels (NBC, PBS, CBS, ABC, and maybe two "uhf" stations), and they were able to fill their programming with non-repeated shows for the most part, there wasn't as much need to change channels.
Nowadays, you have 100+ channels that repeat the same episode a good 10 times throughout the week, you have to do a lot more channel surfing to see something new. Sometimes more isn't better.
