I hope VW gets fined heavily for this or even shut down for such a blatant disrespect of our regulations.
The emissions regulations are there for a reason and it is mostly due to the health issues these diesel engines have been proven to cause. More people die from lung and bronchial cancer in the US than any other cancer and the amount of deaths per year from it more than doubles the next deadliest cancer. These numbers have been steadily decreasing year over year partly due to emissions regulations like the ones that require us to have these "emissions garbage"(as some put it) on our diesels. The same trend happened in Europe when they regulated their diesels with DPF and NOx reduction devices. Not only does it save lives, but it also saves billions a year in medical spending.
I am pretty sure someone will chime in with "What about the money these emissions systems cost me". Well, you gotta pay to play. If you want a diesel then you gotta pay for all that comes with it. No one else should have to pay with their lives or greater health risk just because you are not willing take on all the responsibilities that come with owning a diesel.
